Color Balance Layers

While The Adobe Photoshop Layers Book was written for Photoshop, the techniques can still work via add-ons for the Elements environment that replicate important layer functions in Elements. Start with downloading tools from the hiddenelements.com website, and then ask questions here!

Color Balance Layers

Postby GKeating-Brown » Tue Aug 11, 2009 8:40 pm

I have been working through the Adobe Photoshop Layers Book with Elements 6.0 and have come across a snag. In chapter 3, in the section The Art of Color Balance, I have "discovered" that Elements does not have a Color Balance layer similar to the full version of Photoshop.

Is there a work-around that I can use to proceed from this point?

Color balance effects can be achieved in Elements -- you just have to know how. It is even better to have tools to do it because it is a little complicated to set up. I have the tools. Please email me and make a request, giving me the version number of elements that you have and your platform.

OK?

Hi, Richard. Thanks for taking the time to reply.

I have sent you a couple of e-mails at your address thebookdoc@aol.com and didn't get a reply. A thread on the Hidden Elements page at Retouch Pro makes me suspect that some e-mails are not getting through to you.

I use Elements 6 and Windows Vista. If you could e-mail me the color balance tool or a link to where I can download it, I would appreciate it very much.

My e-mail address is : GKeating-Brown@bigfoot.com

I would think there isn't an email in the hemisphere that doesn't go to my email box. That is likely more of the problem. I block and filter nothing. That just means it takes a long time to get through them. I also need to have time to build that tool...I have it for earlier versions but it is not tested in Elements 7.

Thanks for the note. Please feel free to bug me again in a week.

I half suspected it might be something like that. If you're still building or testing it, no problem. I can find lots of other things in your book to occupy me.

Btw, I use PSElements 6.

Again, thanks.

There are several things in the book that doesn't seem to work as the book states in Elements 7. However, I am not to concerned as I am reading this in preparation for your class. Command + Shift + G seems to leave me a blank white layer. In reading through it appears this action is designed to group together. I have learned alt + click (between two layers) will group those. However, I'm not sure that is the same type of grouping you intend to happen. The color balance is also an issue I don't understand. I have downloaded your free tools from the Hidden Elements site - but I don't really understand how to use them. Would I assume correctly, most of this will become clearer as one goes through the class?

Elements and Photoshop are NOT the same thing...there are some different tools, and shortcuts. The Command + Option + G / CTRL + ALT + G work in Photoshop. Elements is Command+G / Ctrl+G. Color Balance is not available in all versions of Elements. While I can outline how to mimic it and provide tools that will, understand that the book was written for Photoshop CS4. Some things will indeed be different. The tools are mostly explained in my Elements books. If you are taking a course I'd be glad to explain them in context!
